Are you happy to eat whatever you are given? What do you think Babuji meant by having regard for honest and pious earnings? "What is it that brings taste to food?" How careful are you with resources like money, food, water, clothing etc? Do you appreciate what you are given? P*PPPPP, Tz Short Play Philosophy of 8th Maxim The Philosophy involved in it starts from materiality and ends in the final state we all have to arrive at, A happy disposition state which percolates its effect upon the lower layers and purifies them . This is the state which may aptly be taken as that next to divine. Fixing our thought on it means taking into account that which is our final goal. Our rules provide for taking food in the remembrance of god. All our actions should likewise be such as may be helpful to us in the attainment of the Ideal. While taking food we fix our thought upon the ultimate which we have finally to attain, in order to take in its effect too and increase our purity all the more. The Thing got from Nature is very pure because its basis is purity. The thing earned by man can also remain in a pure state when that is got through pure and pious means. Work can become worship only when we understand that this external work that we do is not really work. It is a means of acquiring my livelihood. The true work is that which I do on my self, to become something; Reflection and Discussion points: Remembrance of god while eating Work is worship .. What does it really mean ZbZZ>ZZZZZ#ZLZZZ"*""#"LFsReading on Service Need Based Food Eat less and earn an honest living. Without taking honestly earned food, spiritual experiences often go wrong. Need Based Food? Simple food helps us to live as Nature intended us to live, eating what the body needs for its healthy existence and no more This is a very valuable lesson which Master teaches us by direct example. So we must eat enough to keep the body fit to take us through life. Food is not for taste, it is only for nourishment. What relates to the body applies to the body. We eat when we are hungry. We drink when we are thirsty; what is wrong with it? Do not over do it, let it be spontaneous. Eating must give us spiritual benefit. Chariji s quotes on eating in Babujis house " If any of you had really known what you were eating, no minerals, no salts, no vitamins, no nothing and yet, it was divine. It was so divine that we wished to, or longed to, be there eating that food perpetually. The same thing, day after day, morning and evening! Yet we never felt that we were eating the same thing. It was almost tasteless, yet we were delighted. Why? Because it came from a divine source. What is Prasad? Food handled by the proper person, given to us by his loving hands, becomes something Divine, which contributes to our Divinization, Divine growth. And, at the lowest level it is a bestial injection. A prasad is always sweet, but all sweets are not prasad; precisely because the Divine essence is infused by one who is capable of doing it, into that sweet. It is offered with love and devotion to the Almighty, His presence is invoked into it, it becomes Divinised; therefore it becomes a prasad. PUP"PP@PPPPPz} aGtReading on Service Contd -1YA prasad is not to be eaten in kilos; not even in ounces; it should be taken in such a small quantity, that it is not thrown out of the system at all; because it is a Divine thing. It has been Divinised. So what goes in should not come out. Therefore it is said Anumathra. We are advised by the Master, when we sit down to eat, just to offer the food to the Master mentally and eat it. But prasad is different from offering the food to the Master and eating it ourselves you see. So, don't think every time somebody gives you something, it is prasad. From Gross to Subtle Food VEGETARIAN FOOD: Vegetarian food is recommended because as we become subtler and subtler, the input should match that subtlety. Like 220 volts appliance must have a 220 volts input; 120 volts appliance, if you put a 220 volts power connection, it's going to just "Pachashsh!" NON-VEGETARIAN FOOD: It is not a question of good or bad, but what we take in must match our level of subtlety. Depending on the fineness of the organism, the input has to match that, therefore meat eating is not recommended. Meat-eating is forbidden because it is a grosser food, which will not match your subtler levels of spiritual existence; therefore you cannot take it. Not because it is against the principles of Ahimsa (nonviolence) Cooking should be an art of embellishing what nature provides. When we proceed from cooking to the next stage of embellishment where it is dressed up merely to please the eye, we have already transferred the area of acceptability of food from the mouth and tongue to the eyes, nose, etc. That is, what should be examined from one level of the physical organization is now being examined from another. This shows us the importance of tackling each need from its own level in us, i.e., the physical must be treated purely from the physical, the mental from the mental, and so on.PPPPPPP , ;JuReading on Service Contd -2-Pious Earnings: It is of course, good to find work that one will like to do, but if one cannot do that then one must learn to like the work that one has to do. This is my advice under all circumstances to every body. The worldly work has no concern except to provide us the where with all to live and one should not worry about job satisfaction, etc., in this matter. All jobs are boring in final analysis but when you look at a job as a means of earning money and earning your life, remembering that this life is for the purpose of evolution and not for the purpose of joy, happiness or pleasure, then a job begins to have a meaning as a provider and nothing else. Any business can be done provided one follows strictly the rules of that business. There should be no cheating or avariciousness. If your heart gives you the green signal, you can do the business but ensure that you help the needy by charging them reasonable interest. Any job which helps us to serve human beings while also earning our own livelihood is better than one which gives only an income. B=oConcepts about the Ego~ Pious Earnings Contd& In this world we are born to help ourselves to grow to the highest possible limit of human perfection and that is also the goal of Sahaj Marg spiritual practice. Regarding your work, you must learn to understand that work is only a means of earning money to live reasonably and comfortably in this existence and it is not the main purpose. The main purpose is spiritual. So, as we say in India, work is just to keep body and soul together until the body can be dropped by the soul for the last time and go on its own journey towards merger with the Ultimate. This is the divine plan for all human beings irrespective of where they are, when they are, how they are and who they are of course. Money is necessary in modern life, but one should not think too much or feel that only money gives us security. So much is spoken about money only because of the feeling that money makes everything available, and also secures one's future. I think it is all very illusory. Of course, you are disappointed because you are measuring today's results by today's efforts; whereas today's results could be the results of some past effort of which you know nothing. Please have patience and work harder and harder and result will be guaranteed. What we all need is a god, Do we need food, work, money ? or if you prefer to call it so, a Universal Power or anything like that, but what we need is such an entity as we can approach with love and reverence. |PPPP <nReligion and FoodQSome concepts from Religions: Jesus said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat, nor about your body, what you shall put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap. They have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Islam enjoins us to have a balance diet in order to have a variety of nutrients. When we look at verses from the Holy Qura'n, the recommended foods indicate nutrient density. It states: "O you people! Eat of what is on earth lawful and good!" (2:168) ,"Pure milk, easy and agreeable to swallow for those who drink." (16:66) , "He it is who produceth gardens with trellises and without, and dates, and tilth with produce of all kinds and olives and pomegranates, similar and different, eat of their fruit in season." (16:141) In the Bhagavad-Gita Sri Krishna declares that food is of three types as are sacrifices, austerity and charity. Sattvic (pure) food is that one which increases longevity, purity, strength, health, happiness and taste and which is juicy, oily, durable in nature and liked by sattvic people. Rajasic (hot) food is that one which is bitter, sour salty, hot and spicy, burning and which gives unhappiness, sorrow and disease. Tamasic (intoxicating) food is that one which is stored and devoid of any juices, dried, foul smelling, decomposed, left over and indigestible. 2ZZZZUZ6ZZZZZ;? There is no ostentation, no impressive variety, and no pandering to taste. I have found that this is akin to Nature's way of service. Such food helps us to get what we need from it, nourishment, and prevents greediness and over-indulgence. Taste, artificially created taste, only creates greed and leads to unnatural living. Simple food helps us to live as Nature intended us to live, eating what the body needs for its healthy existence and no more. This is a very valuable lesson which Master teaches us by direct example. Source: P. Rajagopalachari, Chapter "Duty" My Master The Eastern thinkers have taken special regard of the question of food. It should be cooked neatly and cleanly in a proper manner. That is the hygienic point. But if it is sattvik ( ) and is cooked in constant remembrance of God, its effect will be surprising. And if it is taken meditating all the while on God it will cure all kinds of spiritual diseases and remove things which hinder our progress. Source : Conclusion, Efficacy of Raja Yoga In the Light of Sahaj Marg, By Ram Chandra Have we changed at all in the century since Swami Vivekananda said that in India religion has gone into the kitchens. I hope you understand what he meant-that there is more sanctity associated with the preparation of food, how pure it is, whether you had your bath before you went into the kitchen etc. etc., and of course, what he said was true then, it is true today too. We are still, you know, worried about our food and its purity- I'm not talking of the biological purity of the stuff that we eat so that we don't get sick, but the so-called spiritual purity. Source : Faith and Wisdom (August 22, 2003, Atlanta, USA) oP6PPPXP9P<PPPPp6 V : *R'>0X~Short Readings Contd - 2Babuji taught us a way of making everything palatable and good for us spiritually. He said, "Before you eat, meditate for a moment, and offer it to your Master". I don't see anybody doing it. Not one. Sometimes, when I'm at the table and there are some of these oldies from the mission, I think they want to teach me a lesson so they close their eyes and pretend to offer it to the Master, and I have a laugh - I laugh up my sleeve, you see. I say, "These guys want to impress me". And if they were really oldies, and my seniors, and so profoundly advanced in spirituality they shouldn't have to impress me, I should have to impress them. Isn't it? So just try that. Even if it's just a sandwich, or a cookie, as you say in America for a biscuit. Just close your eyes for a moment and think the Great Master is eating it. And you'll find it becomes like nectar. It's no more Indian food; it's no more American food. It's not even food, it is nectar. And nectar belongs to all, you know. There is no Christian nectar, and Hindu nectar, and Muslim nectar, and Buddhist nectar. Nectar is of the gods. So let us try these things in our assemblies. Let us not try artificially to make everybody our brothers and sisters, let us feel it in our hearts. We cannot go around and say, "Hey you, you are my brother, come here," you know. It automatically separates you. We shall collectively try to accomplish the following: What does the 8th Maxim portray What is need based food What do you understand by Pious earnings Evolve a correct understanding of the role played by Ego in facilitating and in hindering Service. The approach used for this program is as follows: A brief talk, skit and short readings to act as triggers. Individual reflection and moderated discussion in a group to evolve an understanding of the topic. )PFPmP8PP2PP(< k8"*" 2 aAgendaAgenda for the day |@p Reflections Some Self Reflections When it comes to food, what do you think of Maxim Eight: "Be happy to eat in constant Divine thought, whatever you get, with due regard for honest and pious earnings" ? Are you happy to eat whatever you are given? What do you think Babuji meant by having regard for honest and pious earnings? "What is it that brings taste to food?" How careful are you with resources like money, food, water, clothing etc? Do you appreciate what you are given? P*PPPPP, Tz Philosophy Philosophy of 8th Maxim The Philosophy involved in it starts from materiality and ends in the final state we all have to arrive at, A happy disposition state which percolates its effect upon the lower layers and purifies them . What does it really mean ZbZZ>ZZZZZ#ZLZZZ"*""#"""L""Fs 8th Maxim4 Need Based Food Eat less and earn an honest living. Without taking honestly earned food, spiritual experiences often go wrong. Need Based Food? A prasad is always sweet, but all sweets are not prasad; precisely because the Divine essence is infused by one who is capable of doing it, into that sweet.
